Sekumpul & Lemukih Waterfalls

Jalan Air Terjun, Sekumpul, Bali

Description

The Sekumpul waterfalls located near Singaraja in north Bali are considered to be the island's most spectacular cascades. Sekumpul actually means "a group" in Bahas Indonesia and there are a total of 7 waterfalls (incl. Lemukih and Gombong) fed by several rivers with the tallest one falling 80m into a pool in which it is possible to swim. You will be approached by local guides offering to take you on a "short trek" or "long trek" down to the waterfalls but despite what they claim, this is not compulsory. The longer route takes in all the main waterfalls.

Access & Transport

The main access point is from Sekumpul village, next to Warung Fiji (it is also possible to reach from Lemukih village). Visitors will trek through fruit plantations and forest with a lot of slippery stairs, it is about 30-45mins on the way down. The villages are 18km southeast of Singaraja, 25km / 50m north of Bedugul & lake Beratan, 70km // 2h from Ubud and 80km / 2h30 from Kuta-Seminyak.

Instructions & Recommendations

Use footwear with a rubber sole and your swimming attire + a towel

Meta review

Online reviews are nearly unanimous in stating that those are indeed the best set of waterfalls in Bali, however a very significant percentage of visitors isn't quite sure whether they would recommend this attraction because of the now widespread attempt at scamming tourists with several parking fees, entrance fees and guiding fees in a sometimes-aggressive fashion. Whilst having a guide is useful, many travellers confirm it isn't necessary and there are blatant attempts by local people to mislead tourists so as to extract rupiah out of them.

Environmental & Social

Green activity. From a community standpoint, greed and questionable practices have taken over unfortunately.

Conclusion

The Sekumpul waterfalls are arguably the best on the island and, in our view, are worth the trip, especially if either Lovina or Lake Beratan are scheduled on your itinerary. Be ready though to be exasperated (and saddened) by the greedy behaviour of the local youths and guides - which is very counterproductive ultimately. We are all for guides but not for imposing them and other scamming techniques so boycott is also an option you should consider.
