Snorkeling Menjangan

Jalan Singaraja-Gilimanuk, Pejarakan, Bali

Description

Menjangan island is part of the West Bali National Park situated at the north-western edge of the Bali. It is known both for its local deer ("Menjangan" means "deer" in Javanese) and its underwater coral reef, making it one of Bali's top diving destinations. There are many operators offering snorkeling and scuba diving trips out of the Pemutaran area. This review and related practical info relate to the snorkeling tour by Snorkeling Menjangan that leaves at 9h00 and return at 13h15. It includes the boat trip, guide, and entrance fees, snorkeling equipment, drinking water and a lunch box.

Access & Transport

The meeting point will be communicated at the time of booking but the office is in the small town of Pejarakan, 10km west of Pemuteran, 10km west and 1h15/56km from Lovina Beach. From South Bali it is a 4h car journey (one-way)

Instructions & Recommendations

Guests should be able to swim. Don't forget to bring a towel, swimwear, and apply sunblock well before you enter the water as most brands are detrimental to coral reefs.

Meta review

Reviews for this operator are positive (although many of them are probably not genuine); guests mention the friendly and professional service. As for the snorkeling it is colourful with good visibility most of the time but the coral, like elsewhere, has seen better days. Useful tip: bring water sandals or diving boots as the beach / water entrance has stones and corals.

Environmental & Social

Green activity if done properly, except for the boat's fuel usage (not a long ride). Helps small independent operators in rural Bali.

Conclusion

Most of the snorkeling operators to Menjangan propose roughly the same package and Snorkeling Menjangan seems to be among the best based on customer reviews. Whether or not you should be making the trip all the way there is a different matter; we would say "yes" if you have already discovered many areas of Bali and looking to explore the northern coast for a few days, but certainly "no" as a rushed 2-day trip from the south.

Key positive

A short boat ride from the shore

Colourful fishes and reefs

Key negative

Time consuming to get to from South and Central Bali

Suitability

Need to be able to swim so best for >6-8yrs old.
