West Bali NP guided tour (safari trip)

Jalan Raya Denpasar - Gilimanuk, Ubung Kaja, Bali

Description

West Bali National Park covers 19,000ha of rainforest, monsoon forest, mangroves, savannah as well as coral reefs surrounding Menjangan island. It is located at the northwestern tip of Bali, a short ferry crossing away from East Java. There are over 160 bird species (including the endemic Bali Starling), 17 species of mammals such as Banteng (a wild relative of cows), Javan Rusa and Indian Muntjac deer, monkeys, reptiles, and fishes. Visitors will need to pay a IDR200-300k entrance fee (weekday Vs weekend, latest info available at the time of review) and then choose a guided tour such as Jungle trekking (2-3h), Birdwatching (3-4h) or Safari trip (3-4h). The price depends on the number of people and length of tour. The number in the practical info section is an estimate.

Access & Transport

Coming from the north coast road, the park is 15mins from Pemuteran (or 90mins from Lovina) and from the southwest it is 15mins from Gilimanuk where the ferry pier for crossing to/from Java is located. From South Bali it is a 4h car journey (one-way)

Instructions & Recommendations

It is possible to find some guide recommandations online so you may wish to arrange beforehand. We would also advise to stay overnight in one of the hotels near the park entrance, between Pemuteran and the area around The Menjangan. This would also allow you to snorkel or scuba dive Menjangan island the day before or after your visit to the park.

Meta review

This one is a little difficult because opinions vary widely. A main topic of contention is having to hire a guide and those who were not planning on using one feel they are being scammed. On the other hand, a lot of visitors were planning to hire one in any case but most do agree that prices have become inflated, especially as the quality of guides and experience vary widely.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity that educates visitors about the local ecosystems. Socially marginally positive because of the use of guides but some increasingly negative behaviour with respect to pricing

Conclusion

West Bali NP is quite a trek (!) from the tourist hotspots on the island and whilst it can make for an interesting day out, in particular for bird watchers and animal lovers, the combination of cost, inconsistent level of service from the guides and long journey involved make it hard to recommend except to those who have plenty of time to spend on the island but not keen on crossing into Java or another part of Indonesia to see spectacular natural environments.
