Nusa Lembongan

Jalan Jungutbatu, Jungutbatu, Bali

Description

Nusa Lembongan is one of Bali's south-eastern islands, 12km from Bali "mainland". It is only 8km2 in size, which is much larger than neighbouring Nusa Ceningan (can be visited together) but much smaller than Nusa Penida, the furthest of the 3. The island is known for its beaches, limestone cliffs, and amazing marine life with some dive sites that are famous internationally.

Access & Transport

The most frequent transport option is the fast ferry from Sanur, there are several trips per day scheduled leaving from the main beach. The crossing takes 30mins or 1h30 with the slow boat option. It is also possible to reach from Gili (Lombok) or Padang Bai (East Bali). From neighbouring Nusa Penida, there are services departing from the Yellow Bridge linking Lembongan and Ceningan to Toya Pakeh Harbour. On Lembongan, you can walk, take a taxi or rent a scooter to explore the island.

Instructions & Recommendations

A day trip is a good option but even better would be to stay one or two nights and enjoy the excellent diving (snorkeling / scuba) and the sunsets over Bali

Meta review

Besides diving (scuba mostly but also snorkelling), the main natural features / attractions are Devil's Tear and the Mangrove Forest. The latter draws mixed reviews; nice for 30-60mins if you have never seen / gone through a mangrove area but not much wildlife to spot. Better go when the tide is high (the locals will still rent out kayaks at low tide so bear that in mind). As for Devils' Tear, the sight of the waves crashing against the cliffs is always impressive, shame about the surrounding construction works that takes away some of the natural beauty of the area.

Environmental & Social

Whilst many activities have limited carbon footprint, you'll need to go there by boat and the island is now clearly being over-developed. It is only a question of time before it impacts the natural environment in an unsustainable fashion and the islanders' behaviour is also changing, not for the better.

Conclusion

If you have already been to Bali a couple of times or have more than 10 days to spend there, then Nusa Lembongan is a good alternative, in particular if you are planning on some diving. It is enjoyable but lacks the raw beauty of its bigger neighbour Nusa Penida, Uluwatu, Central Bali, or Northeast Bali.
