Angel Billabong & Broken Beach

Description

Angel Billabong and Broken Beach are two of Nusa Penida's most famous natural features and are located within walking distance of each other. The former is a small rockpool at the edge of the ocean whereas the lagoon at Broken Beach is now joined to the ocean, erosion having created a natural arch (through the limestone) on which it is possible to walk. Nusa Penida is the largest (200km2) and furthest of the three south-eastern islands of Bali. It is known for its spectacular scenery (cliffs and beaches) and renowned diving sites such as Manta Point.

Access & Transport

The site is about 10km west of the "main road" in Batumadeg or 12km southwest of Sakti. The best way to get there is by scooter or with a taxi. You can also join an organised day-tour. At the time of this review, the last 2kms or so of the road were in a bad state but the rest seemed to have been re-asphalted recently. There is a concrete path and stairs leading down to Angel’s Billabong and then on to Broken Beach

Instructions & Recommendations

If you go down into, or on the edge of, the Angel Billabong lagoon, make sure you keep your eyes on the ocean waves, there have been several accidents, including fatal ones - and don't go if there is a strong swell. We suggest combining a visit there with Kelingking beach & cliff, 9km away.

Meta review

Like nearby Kelingking beach, the duo of Angel Billabong and Broken Beach has shot to fame over the last few years with the rise of social media - and it can be felt. The main complaint of reviewers is how crowded those places are, having to wait so they can have their picture taken or shoot their own selfies, and the second issue is tourist dropping rubbish/wrappers on the floor like it's ok. Beyond that, the vast majority of travellers do really enjoy both places with the clear blue waters and advise to go at low tide if you want to dip in the AB's rockpool.

Environmental & Social

Green activity and so far, it hasn't had too much detrimental impact on the local community (unlike other prime attractions in Bali)

Conclusion

The arch of Broken Beach and the Angel Billabong lagoon are mildly impressive sights - essentially, we were a little underwhelmed Vs what the reviews stated, and especially after experiencing Kelingking. Nice but does not justify a trip on its own. Something to see as part of a sightseeing tour or ride.

Key positive

Broken beach is visually enjoyable

Key negative

Busy with tourists

Lagoon is dangerous at high tide

Suitability

Visitors with reduced mobility may be able to get a decent view of Broken Beach (with assistance) but getting to Angel Billabong involves quite a few stairs along the concrete path
