Atuh beach & cliffs

Description

Atu Beach is a 200m crescent of beach enclosed between limestone cliffs from the top of which there are sweeping views over Nusa Penida's dramatic rugged south-eastern coastline. There are two access paths, one less steep and technical than the other, and the beach isn't ideal for swimming, especially at low tide, because of the rocky shoreline. Nusa Penida is the largest (200km2) and furthest of the three south-eastern islands of Bali. It is known for its spectacular scenery (cliffs and beaches) and renowned diving sites such as Manta Point.

Access & Transport

The beach is diametrically across the island from the main landing point of Toya Pakeh Harbour, about 28km / 1h15 drive. The road leading to the vantage points and the beach branches off the "main road" in Pejukutan with 6km to go.

Instructions & Recommendations

The main access to the beach is quite steep, best to wear proper footwear (with grip) and, if you intend to swim, water sandals. The Temple of Goa Giri Putri is 12km away along the northeast coast. There is an excellent viewpoint of the cliffs and beach from "Jungle Tree" just to the south which involves a 5mins steep downhill walk from the parking area (Rp10,000 for cars and 5,000 for motorbikes).

Meta review

Atuh Beach is one of the most popular spots in Nusa Penida and gets excellent reviews from tourists who enjoy both chilling at the beach and the views from the top. What a fair share of visitors dislike is the path(s) to access the beach: too treacherous or long or steep (or all of it) and the increasingly negative behaviour of the F&B stall owners at the beach - make sure you ask for the price before you order. Comparing it to Kelingking, it seems this ranks a little behind in terms of experience.

Environmental & Social

Green activity and so far, it hasn't had too much detrimental impact on the local community (unlike other prime attractions in Bali) but the budding signs are there

Conclusion

Atuh beach is a nice option for spending a couple of hours relaxing by the ocean but for us it is the views from the top that are the drawcard here. An excellent addition to the list of places to see and things to do in Nusa Penida.
