Goa Giri Putri Temple, Nusa Penida

Description

Goa Giri Putri is one of Nusa Penida's most sacred temples, it is housed in a limestone cave in the cliffs along the island's northeast coast. The main cavern contains several shrines and extends over nearly 300m. Nusa Penida is the largest (200km2) and furthest of the three south-eastern islands of Bali. It is known for its spectacular scenery (cliffs and beaches) and renowned diving sites such as Manta Point.

Access & Transport

Access is from a steep flight of stairs up from the main road and into a narrow "crack" in the rocks. There is an alternate. more straightforward exit path but it still involves stairs. The temple is next to the main road, 5km southeast of Batoemoenggoel and a further 10km from Toya Pakeh Harbour.

Instructions & Recommendations

You will need to wear a sarong to enter (available for rent at the entrance) and the following individuals cannot enter: recently bereaved persons, women who have recently given birth or are menstruating and magical charms. The "donation" is compulsory (tested that first-hand) and amounted to Rp50,000 at the time of his review. Sarong was Rp5,000

Meta review

Online reviews are good but not exceptional for this temple. For most reviewers, the main "interest" is the entrance through the crack in the rocks and the first wow of coming out into a large cave but, beyond that, many state that there is actually little to see. They also note that the hike up the stairs is steep and that there is a lot of rubbish on the ground in the surrounding area.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. This has turned into a commercial endeavour with negative impact on behaviours

Conclusion

If you are already on Nusa Penida then we would suggest stopping by Goa Giri Putri; even if you have seen many temples in Bali this one is different and, in that sense, memorable. What we disliked was being forced to give a substantial "donation" so that 20+ men dressed in white can just spend their day doing nothing in the shade.
