Seminyak & Canggu neighbourhoods

Jalan Petitenget, Kerobokan Kelod, Bali

Description

Seminyak is a tourist residential area situated immediately to the north of Kuta/Legian in South Bali. It is very popular for its high-end spas, hotels and villas, trendy cafes and restaurants, and its beach clubs such as Potato Head and Ku De Ta. Canggu and the areas around it cover the area north of Seminyak along the shore. It is centred around the strips of Jl Pantai Batu Bolong, Jl Pantai Berawa and Jl Batu Belig (technically in Kerobokan). It used to be, and still is, more laid back than Seminyak but is increasingly popular, especially with expat residents and independent travellers looking for good trade-off between location, environment and price.

Access & Transport

The area is 15km north of the airport with both taxis and minibuses plying the very busy Jl Legian and Sunset Rd. From there it is 30km to Uluwatu (50'), 23kmto Nusa Dua, 20km to Sanur and 27km (50') to Ubud. Taxi, scooter and minibus are all possible options.

Instructions & Recommendations

Traffic can be slow along the various lanes (better by scooter) and going north or south often means backtracking to the feeder streets of Jl Raya Canggu and Jl Raya Kerobokan. There are plenty of activities to do in the area such as Yoga, fitness or surf classes and, of course, all the cool F&B venues.

Meta review

Both neighbourhoods are now super popular and include well-known beach clubs and F&B establishments. Beyond that, visitors enjoy the surf breaks in the Canggu area and the sunset views along the beach. The main issues are the rubbish on the beach and poor quality of the water along Seminyak Beach, and the standard safety issue late at night near bars and nightclubs.

Environmental & Social

Gone are the rice paddies and no proper sewage system. The development of the area has been a boon for local employment but it also exacerbates negative behaviours.

Conclusion

Canggu and Seminyak are assuredly one of the best places to stay on the island for those looking to enjoy a variety of activities, some nightlife and who like to eat well and/or healthy. It isn't the best suited for families (beach isn't very attractive) but otherwise it is an area we recommend as part of an island-wide itinerary that would also include some time around Ubud and a third leg either in the East or in Uluwatu, depending on personal preferences.
