Wat Mangkon Kamalawat

423 Charoen Krung Road, Khwaeng Pom Prap, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon

Description

Wat Mangkon Kamalawat or Wat Leng Noei Yi is the largest and most important Chinese Buddhist temple in Bangkok. It was founded in the 1870s and designed in a classic Chinese architectural style with tiled roofs decorated with animal and floral motifs. In the first room you will be welcomed by the four Heavenly Kings after which there is a variety of shrines dedicated to Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist deities. Expect incense, red and gold to dominate your senses.

Access & Transport

The temple is located in Bangkok's Chinatown, 2.5km southeast of the Grand Palace and 1km west of the main train station. The Wat Mangkon metro station (blue line) is the next block over.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest visiting this temple as part of an exploration of Chinatown including the Golden Buddha / Phra Sukhothai Traimit, a 10mins walk away headed towards the train station.

Meta review

Not always featured in the city's shortlist of tourist attractions, the online reviews are good without being exceptional. Many visitors don't think it is worth a special trip across town but if you happen to go to (Bangkok's) Chinatown then it should be included, especially since it is so close to the metro station. What people enjoy is the change in architecture as compared to the Thai temples and the atmosphere (rather than the artistic aspects) with many Chinese locals praying. It can get a little crowded during specific festivals / celebrations.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral and part of the city's cultural heritage.

Conclusion

Lively and colourful, a good add-on to those checking out Bangkok's Chinatown neighbourhood. Also provides some architectural variety to your temple pictures

Key positive

Colourful and easy to get to

Key negative

No standout feature

Suitability

No religious denomination restrictions and accessible but visitors with reduced mobility may find it challenging to navigate inside when busy
