Llopart Cava Reserva tour & tasting

Carretera Sant Sadurní, Barcelona, Catalunya

Description

The Can Llopart de Subiras estate is located in Alt Penedès, at an average altitude of 360m. As early as 1385, grapevine, olive and wheat were cultivated. At the end of the 18th century, the estate became dedicated exclusively to wine growing and the first sparkling wine bottle was produced in 1887. The main grape varieties used for the white wines are Xarel·lo, Macabeu and Parellada whereas the rosé wines use a blend of Pinot Noir, Monastrell and Garnatxa. The plots are harvested manually and organic farming techniques are used. The "Reserva Tour" reviewed here lasts 2h and starts with a walk in the vineyards, providing visitors with information about the estate history and organic grape growing. It then continues with a tour of the production facilities and a tasting of three sparkling wines (incl. one Reserva bottle).

Access & Transport

The estate is just south of the village of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, 45km west of Barcelona. The village can be reached on the A-7 expressway, exit 27 or by regional train from Catalunya train station in Barcelona. From Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, head south on the BP-2427 for 4km.

Instructions & Recommendations

We recommend making an appointment / online booking for the tour ahead of time. Children under 18 can join the tour but will not be able to enjoy the sparkling wine tasting (hence the reduced price). Logistically, this activity can be combined with a trip to the Montserrat Abbey or the Sitges seaside village.

Meta review

Reviews for the tour are excellent (too much?). Visitors point out the quality of the guides, the wines and the interesting background information about grape growing, wine production and the history of the estate.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Socially the cultural aspect (discovery of the terroir and wine making culture of Alt Penedès region) almost evens out the alcohol element.

Conclusion

We would recommend the tour to anybody who happens to be in a 1h radius (Barcelona-based most likely) and curious about cava / Spanish sparkling wines. There is a good balance between size of the estate and visitors set up so that even if it is a little commercial, it isn't excessively so. Price wise it isn't really cheap, but we think value is fair.

Key positive

Beautiful setting and views

Easy half day trip from Barcelona

Key negative

A little expensive

Suitability

Only adults can taste wines but children can tag along and should find some aspects of the tour interesting. It is unclear if the tour is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, we believe most of it would be except for a close inspection of the vines.
