Sitges village, Catalunya

Plaça Espanya, Sitges, Catalunya

Description

Sitges is a coastal town located 35km southwest from Barcelona along the Costa Dorada. It is considered one of the most charming towns that is easily accessible as a day trip from Barcelona - though it is pleasant and lively enough for overnight or multi-night stays. The town is well known for the Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, better known as "La Punta", San Sebastian beach, its narrow streets filled with bars and cafes, and its gay scene (beach, bars and clubs)

Access & Transport

The easiest way from Barcelona is by train (35mins), using the R2 Sud Cercanias line from either Sants or Passeig de Gracia stations. There are also Buses operated by Monbus (50mins) and by car the fastest route is via the C-32 highway (toll); the C-31 offers a more leisurely and enjoyable alternative. Instructions & Recommendations

Make sur you study your mode of transport ahead of time and pack some sunblock, water and a few snacks if you are going for a day trip. You should be able to buy anything you need over there.

Meta review

Sitges is a well-advertised destination with magazines and websites describing its attractive church setting, numerous beaches, winding street and LGBT credentials. Reviewers generally back that view but also stress the increasing number of street vendors trying to sell junk goods on the main promenade, which is increasingly altering the town's atmosphere.

Environmental & Social

The increase in tourism is having a negative impact on the natural environment and the community (over-commercialization, traffic, poor employment practice and street vendors)

Conclusion

Sitges is probably the best day-trip option from Barcelona for those looking for nice beaches and relying on public transport. For multi-day stays there might be less touristy alternative a bit further away (such as north along the Costa Brava). Just be aware, to avoid potential shock or confusion, that there are nudist and gay beaches, but that should not prevent you from enjoying the place during the day, or even at night.
