Volta al Pedraforca hike

1 Plaça Major, Gósol, Catalunya

Description

The Volta a Pedraforca is a hike that loops around the prominent and beautiful Pedraforca mountain in Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park in northern Catalonia, close to the Pyrenees range. The mountain consists of two ridges with respective elevation of 2,506m and 2,445m and a prominence of 654m. It is one of the region's emblematic natural features and can be found on the coat of arms of the comarca of Berguedà where it lies. The 15km hike has a cumulative ascent of about 1500m, making it suitable for strong intermediate hikers. The estimated completion time is 4.5 to 6.5h depending on fitness and duration of breaks.

Access & Transport

The town of Gósol is 140km / 2h north of Barcelona. The nearest mid-size town is Berga, 40km away (on the road from Barcelona) - from there take the C-16 northbound and then the B-400 until you reach the village.

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure to bring proper footwear, some snacks (and possibly a picnic), plenty of water, sun protection and rain/wind coat depending on the weather forecast. Cloudy doesn't mean the UVs won't get to you and the weather changes quickly in the high mountains.

Meta review

Hiking portals describe the trail as one of the most scenic in the area and reviewers seem to agree. The main recommendation is to have grippy shoes as there can be some scrambling involved and to go around in a counterclockwise direction.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity. Socially marginally positive as it brings some revenues to the villages in the area

Conclusion

The hike around the Pedraforca mountain is a well-regarded route which provides magnificent views of the mountain but also the surrounding valleys and is an excellent opportunity to discover some of the villages in the area and enjoy some well-deserved recovery lunch or dinner there afterward.
