Description
The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, a.k.a. MACBA houses a collection of around 5,000 works dating from the mid-20th century. There are three sections with chronological splits: the 1940's-50's, the 1960's-70's and contemporary art since then. The building architectural style has strong links with Modernism.
Access & Transport
The museum is located on the Plaça dels Àngels, in El Raval neighbourhood of Barcelona. A short walk from other tourist highlights in El Raval, Las Ramblas or the Gothic Quarter. The closest metro stations are Universitat (L1/L2) and Catalunya (L1, L3, L6, L7, S7), both about 500m away. There are also bus stops along Gran Via des les Corts Catalanes at about the same distance.
Instructions & Recommendations
This activity is best combined with a visit of the El Raval neighbourhood, La Boqueria Market and a walk along Las Ramblas.
Environmental & Social
The Museum has comprehensive environment sustainability and social responsibility policies. Unfortunately, it is heavy on words and light on figures so difficult to assess their impact (and no information on baseline)
Conclusion
MACBA is a good contemporary art museum but not one that will make you change your mind about that type of art. There are no highlights, so just follow your instinct on whether this is for you or not.
