Barceloneta Beach, Barcelona

Passeig Marítim de la Barceloneta, Barcelona, Catalunya

Description

La Barceloneta Beach is the most central and popular beach in Barcelona. For a long time inhabited by poor fishermen in a shantytown, the area is now fully modernized and gets very busy in the summer season with restaurants, bars and clubs lining the waterfront. It should be noted that the beach is actually artificial one, so erosion and sand quality is a continuing issue.

Access & Transport

The beach is located in the Barceloneta neighbourhood, immediately to the southwest of El Born. The bus is the best way to get there followed by the metro L4 at Barceloneta and Ciutadella Villa Olimpica stations, about 1km from the beach. Driving is also relatively convenient, coming in from Ronda Littoral or Carrer de la Camina.

Instructions & Recommendations

It's the beach and the sun can be strong in Barcelona so don't forget the usual protective equipment (hat/cap, "green" sunblock, sunglasses, slippers) and some water. Other nearby activities include the Aquarium Barcelona and El Born neighbourhood

Meta review

The beach is a little hyped in magazines and some travel websites, but reviews are quite mixed. Visitors enjoy the proximity to the city center but there are recurring negative comments about the crowd, beach vendors, and the water and sand quality.

Environmental & Social

Natural beaches have a low carbon footprint, but artificial ones often have environmental consequences in the ecosystem of origin. The original community has changed dramatically over the last few decades and now it is all about beachgoers / tourists with the associated negative impact on mindset and social fabric.

Conclusion

The Playa de Barceloneta is the most convenient beach to reach for anybody staying in the city center and if you are only looking for some time lying on the sand and some seaside nightlife then this really is an excellent option. However, if you are after a quality natural beach with enjoyable water and sand then you should look for alternatives.
