Casa Mila (La Pedrera)

92 Passeig de Gràcia, Barcelona, Catalunya

Description

Casa Milà is a modernist private residence in Barcelona designed by architect Antoni Gaudí and built at the beginning of the 20th century. It is nicknamed "La Pedrera", meaning "the Stone Quarry". It is best known for its undulating stone facade, twisting wrought iron balconies and roof terrace. The "Pedrera Essential" tour reviewed here lasts about 90mins and includes a visit of the Flower and Butterfly courtyards, the Milà Family’s Apartment, the Tenants’ Apartment, the Whale Attic and the Warrior Rooftop with panoramic views of the city.

Access & Transport

Address: Pg. de Gràcia, 92 Located along Passeig de Gracia, just 100m away from Diagonal (L3/L5) metro station and some bus stops along that road. Alternatively, it is just 150m away from Avinguda Diagonal with additional bus services and 700m from Verdaguer metro station (L4/L5).

Instructions & Recommendations

We would recommend buying your ticket online (EUR3 cheaper than at the ticket office) and combining this with a discovery of the Eixample neighbourhood, including Passeig de Gracia, Casa Battló and La Sagrada Familia or Plaça de Catalunya.

Meta review

The house is regularly featured in travel magazines and guidebooks so there is a large number of visitors with elevated expectations. Most enjoy the tour because of the striking and original design, the Gaudi's exhibition space and the views from the roof. Most of the negative comment relate to price and the fact that there is not that much to see inside.

Environmental & Social

Low carbon footprint. The Catalunya La Pedrera uses proceeds to support various causes including REMS programme for older people with Alzheimer's disease and other form of dementia, science vocation programmes, and biodiversity conservation projects. Conclusion

The Casa Mila is one of Gaudi's masterpieces and is worth a visit. Unfortunately, the pricing is out of line with major tourist attractions in continental Europe for which the non-profit aspect is an unconvincing excuse. So, if your budget is limited and a visit to La Pedrera is somehow redundant with some of Gaudi's other work in the city, we would recommend you pick and choose those that best fit your personal interests rather than pay for all of them.
