Cathedral of Barcelona

Pla de la Seu, Barcelona, Cataluña

Description

The Barcelona Cathedral was built in the Gothic style between the 13th and 15th centuries in what is now known as the Barrio Gotico. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona and is dedicated to Eulalia of Barcelona, the city's co-patron saint (the building's full name is Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia). It is well known for its neo-Gothic facade dating from the late 19th century, the gargoyles on its roof and the 13 white geese kept in the cloister (13 being the age Eulalia was when she was martyred). This review is for a visit of the Cathedral (incl. rooftop access and Chor entrance) but not of the Diocesan Museum (for which there is a €3 supplement).

Access & Transport

The church is on Pla de la Seu. Jaume 1 metro station (L4) is just 200m away and Liceu station (L3) on Las Ramblas is 500m away. If you are in the Gothic Quarter, La Ribera or El Raval, you can easily walk there.

Instructions & Recommendations

We recommend combining this activity with a discovery of the Gothic Quarter or La Ribera neighbourhood together with a visit of the Picasso Museum there.

Meta review

Visitors enjoy the impressive Gothic facade, the scale of the interior, the story of St Eulalie and the rooftop visit from where one can better see the spires and gargoyles. The main negative comments relate to the lift line to go up and the lack of originality of the interior as compared to other cathedrals.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Socially, marginally positive impact on the community and the entrance fee helps preserve this historic building, part of the city's architectural heritage.

Conclusion

The Cathedral of Barcelona imposing presence and spectacular facade are worth a detour for anyone already in the old city. However, whether to pay to go inside should be dictated by one's personal interest in catholic churches and related art, history and relics.
