Description
The Parc de la Ciutadella of Barcelona includes the Palau del Parlament de Catalunya (the assembly hall for the autonomous community of Catalunya), the city zoo, museums, a small lake and a large fountain (the Cascada). It started life as a Citadel erected by Philip V of Spain by destroying part of the La Ribera district and was turned over to the city in the mid 19th century. Some buildings symbolic of the central Spanish government were destroyed then.
Access & Transport
The park is located immediately east of El Born, on the edge of the old city. The two closest metro stations are Arc de Triomf (L1) to the northwest of the park and Ciutadella Vila Olimpica (L4) to the southeast, each a 3mins walk away. There are also several bus stops around the park along Passeig de Picasso and Passeig de Pujades.
Instructions & Recommendations
We recommend combining this activity with a visit of the city zoo, of the Museum of Natural Sciences or of the El Born neighbourhood.
Environmental & Social
We deem this activity to be marginally positive from an environmental and community standpoints, on account of the green space and trees.
Conclusion
The Park de la Ciutadella is quite centrally located and makes for a perfect green break after an exploration of the El Born or Barceloneta neighbourhoods. It also has attractions in its own rights with the zoo, a museum and the Catalan Parliament but somehow falls short from being a real city highlight (in our opinion).
