Gràcia neighbourhood, Barcelona

Travessera de Gràcia, Barcelona, Catalunya

Description

Gràcia is very cosmopolitan district of Barcelona with many one-way streets organized around a series of plazas such as Plaça de la Virreina or Plaça de Vila de Gràcia. The absence of any tourist must-see attraction means that it has remained very "local" and nightlife there is dominated by Spanish café culture. Highlights include Casa Fuster (designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner), Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia and Casa Vicens (designed by Gaudí). The Festes de Gràcia, which goes on for eight days every August, is the City's largest neighbourhood festival. Historically, the area was an independent municipality until the end of the 19th century and was linked to Barcelona via Passeig de Gràcia.

Access & Transport

Gràcia is a district of Barcelona located immediately to the North of Eixample; it is served by the L3 (Penitents, Vallcarca, Lesseps, and Fontana stations) and L4 (Joanic and Verdaguer stations) metro lines as well as the Gracia train station (L6, L7 and ES, S1, S2, S5, S7). There are also numerous bus services covering the area.

Instructions & Recommendations

This area is worth considering as a place to stay. We suggest combining this activity with Parc Güell to the north of Casa Milà in the Eixample neighbourhood.

Meta review

This neighbourhood doesn't get much press besides some digital nomad blogs. Most reviews have the same over-riding conclusion: it is a great place to wander around and it has retained a bit of a village feel, markedly different from the rest of Barcelona. Because there is no high expectation, there are very few people expressing disappointment.

Environmental & Social

Urban environment with hardly any green spaces. Socially neutral

Conclusion

The Barri de Gràcia has a distinct vibe from the more touristy areas of the city. There isn't any major tourist draw which is undoubtedly why it has remained authentic. If you are spending more than 4 days in the city and enjoy exploring various neighbourhoods, this should definitely be on your itinerary so you can get a more "authentic" experience. You may also consider being based there.
