Description
The Joan Miró Foundation (Fundació Joan Miró in Catalan) is a museum of modern art that houses the main collection of Joan Miró's works and also includes a space dedicated to promoting the work of young experimental artists. The Museum was the artist's idea and was designed by his close friend Josep Lluís Sert.
Access & Transport
The museum is located on the hill of Montjuïc in Barcelona. By public transport, the easiest way is to take the Montjuïc Funicular (from the metro Paral·lel on L2/L3) or bus 55/150 that stops opposite the Museum.
Instructions & Recommendations
This activity is best combined with a visit of the National Museum of Catalan Art, the Olympic Stadium or a Cable Car ride to the Montjuïc castle.
Environmental & Social
A comprehensive environmental report is available online (although not the latest). The targets could be more aggressive, but the building is not a major offender in the first place. The foundation purchases "green energy" from their supplier and LED lighting was installed in 2018-19. From a social perspective, the Foundation aims to spread knowledge and appreciation of contemporary art.
Conclusion
The Joan Miró Foundation is a museum that we highly recommend because it brings together some of the best artwork of the Barcelona-born Surrealist artist in a smartly laid out building with nice views over the city in a tranquil setting. Even for those who are unsure whether they will enjoy Miró's collection, we think it is worth a visit - unless you are extremely pressed for time.
