Description
La Boqueria is the best-known public market in Barcelona, its full name is Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria. There are currently over 300 stalls selling fresh products (fruits, vegetables, meat and fish mostly) and some bars. The present structure dates from the early 19th century but there were market activities near the site since the 13th century.
Access & Transport
The market is located just off Las Ramblas in the El Raval neighbourhood, a stone's throw away from Liceu metro station (L3) on Las Ramblas
Instructions & Recommendations
If you want to avoid the crowd and get the freshest products, we recommend going early to mid-morning. This activity is best combined with a visit of the El Raval neighbourhood and a walk along Las Ramblas. The MACBA and Maritime Museum are also a short walk away (opposite directions though).
Environmental & Social
No environmental data available. We deem this activity neutral socially as we have no information relating to the origin of products and the rent system.
Conclusion
La Boqueria Market deserves its popularity in many ways as the food is good and one can find a wide range of quality products, as well as some bars, in a compact area. Unfortunately, the stall owners are riding the wave of tourism and prices are on an inflationary trend so we would suggest you enjoy with your eyes, pick up a few snacks but go and have lunch / buy groceries elsewhere. The downside of winners take all...
