Labyrinth Park of Horta

1 Passeig dels Castanyers, Barcelona, Catalunya

Description

The Park of the Labyrinth of Horta is a historical garden in the Horta-Guinardó district in Barcelona. It is located on the former estate of the Desvalls family who handed the park over to the municipality in 1967. There are 3 sections spanning 9ha: the hedge maze made up of 750m of trimmed cypress trees on the lower level, an 18th century neoclassical garden and a 19th century romantic garden. There are numerous sculptures, fountains, pools and springs.

Access & Transport

The Mundet (L3) metro station is nearby (200m) and there is a bus stop on Passeig de la Vall d'Hebron. By car, use the Ronda de Dalt and it is possible to find free parking in the area.

Instructions & Recommendations

If you feel like having a day out of the city, this activity can be combined with a hike in the Serra de Collserola Natural Park.

Meta review

Reviews for the park are positive, most visitors come with little expectations and leave with very positive impressions - not particularly from maze but mostly of the beauty, topography and variety of the romantic and classical gardens. The low entry price is also a welcome surprise for many. The only negative comments are from people who came in with elevated expectations for the maze and found it insufficiently challenging, or from the unlucky ones coming when it is under repair / maintenance.

Environmental & Social

A very green activity and entrance is free for local residents (a positive in terms of community credentials).

Conclusion

The Labyrinth Park of Horta is a perfect under-the-radar option for visitors with more than 4 days in the city to take a break from the crowds and the city streets and buildings. It is fairly quick to get to by metro, cheap and very relaxing. Adults and kids alike can also have a little fun in the cypress maze.
