Maritime Museum, Barcelona

Avinguda de les Drassanes, Barcelona, Catalunya

Description

The Maritime Museum of Barcelona focus is on the history of navigation and that of the Spanish Navy since the 15th century. It is housed in the royal arsenal of Barcelona where shipbuilding was taking place from the 13th to 18th century. The collection includes navigation instruments and charts, ship replicas, painting and weapons.

Access & Transport

The museum is situated next to the Columbus Monument, at the beginning (or end) of Las Ramblas. The Drassanes metro station (L3) is 2mins away and there are bus stops close by on Av. de las Drassanes and Av. del Paral.lel. For parking, there is the Drassanes Garage (Carrer Portal de Santa Madrona, 10) and Moll de la Fusta (Passeig Colom, 23).

Instructions & Recommendations

We would suggest combining a visit to the museum with the Aquarium Barcelona across la Rambla del Mar, a walk along Las Ramblas or a discovery of El Raval neighbourhood.

Meta review

We focused on the more recent reviews (post 2018) as there seem to have been a significant upgrade since those days. Visitors are on average very positive about the building, the quality of the objects (in particular the full-size Royal Galley replica) and the information provided. The main recurring complaint are around the seemingly haphazard layout.

Environmental & Social

No data around environmental practices. The museum "carries out projects devoted to maritime culture and heritage, linked with education, archiving, corporate social responsibility and research areas". They focus, inter alia, on better working conditions, gender equality and equal opportunity - all aspects over which they have direct control.

Conclusion

The Maritime Museum of Barcelona is an excellent educational activity that should be more popular given the city ties with the navy and the history of navigation. The content and displays are such that they suit adults and children alike, so this works very well as a family activity and something different from exploring the neighbouring streets of the Gothic Quarter or El Raval.
