Montjuïc Castle, Barcelona

66 Carretera de Montjuïc, Barcelona, Catalunya

Description

The Montjuïc Castle ("Castell de Montjuïc" in Catalan) was first built in the 17th century atop Montjuïc hill in Barcelona before being demolished in 1751 and then rebuilt into the structure that can be visited today. The castle has played a key role in the history of the city and Catalunya (it was also used intermittently as a prison and torture centre); a bloody history that continued into the Spanish Civil War. It was turned into a military museum in 1963 until 2010 after which it was transferred from the Spanish government to the municipality.

Access & Transport

The best way to get to the top of Montjuïc hill is to drive or use bus 150 (leaving from Avinguda de la reina Maria Cristina near Pl. Espanya), walk or use the Montjuïc cable car.

Instructions & Recommendations

At the time of this review, the English guided tours ost an extra €4 and are scheduled on weekends at 13h00. We recommend combining this activity with the Botanical Garden and a discovery of the Montjuic hill area, including the Joan Miro Fondation and the National Museum of Catalan Art. If price is not an issue, then the cable car ride is also a natural combo which you can use to go up to the Castle and back down to the Funicular.

Meta review

The reviews for the Castle are mixed. The views are always mentioned among positives, but several visitors thought they was not much to see in the castle itself. Those who took the tour (extra €4) seem to have gotten much more out of it and a much more thorough understanding of the castle's history.

Environmental & Social

No data available. We deem this activity environmentally neutral and marginally positive from a social perspective as it helps preserve the city's cultural heritage

Conclusion

The Montjuïc Castle is a nice addition to a visit of the area and for those not pressed for time (or on repeat visits). It isn't spectacular but its history is interesting, we would recommend taking a tour to get the most out of you visit.
