Palace of Catalan Music guided tour

Carrer del Palau de la Música, Barcelona, Cataluña

Description

The Palace of Catalan Music (Palau de la Música Catalana) is a concert Hall in La Ribera neighbourhood of Barcelona. It was built at the outset of the 20th century and designed in the Catalan modernista style, with curves and rich decoration, by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner for the Orfeó Català, a choral society. Nowadays it hosts a wide range of musical performances such as jazz, Cançó (Catalan song), philharmonic orchestras and chamber music. The façade decoration includes mosaics, red brick, stained glass, iron and glazed tiles and the concert hall is famed for the large ceiling skylight of stained glass. This review is for the guided tour lasting about 50mins

Access & Transport

The building is 200m away from Urquinaona metro station (L1/L4) and a 5mins walk from Plaça de Catalunya, the largest transport node of the city.

Instructions & Recommendations

Please note that the guided tour is offered in several languages - check the website for the exact timing suitable for you. We would recommend buying in advance as spaces are quite limited for each group. This activity is best combined with a visit of the El Born neighbourhood, Picasso Museum or Gothic Quarter.

Meta review

Reviews of the tour and the building are extremely positive. Visitors are impressed by the decoration and parts of the building, especially the concert hall with its giant dome, a mosaic of coloured glass that lets natural light in. The only recurring complaint relates to the ticket price, especially when compared to other cultural activities.

Environmental & Social

No data available besides a generic environmental policy. We deem this activity neutral on that front and marginally positive from a social perspective as it helps preserve the city and regional cultural heritage.

Conclusion

The Palace of Catalan Music is truly an impressive display of Catalan modernism architecture with its curvilinear style and an extensive use of mosaic, stained glass and ceramics - a trademark of Lluís Domènech i Montaner projects. If you have no plans to attend a concert there, the guided or self-guided tours are the best way to discover the building stupendous interior.
