Park Güell, Barcelona

Carrer d'Olot, Barcelona, Catalunya

Description

Parc Güell is a private park located on Carmel Hill, in the Gràcia district of Barcelona. The park was built in the early 20th century and designed by Antoni Gaudí in its "organic" style. It was originally meant to become a housing development but that turned out to be commercially unsuccessful. The most famous parts of the park are the 2 houses with fantastically shaped roofs at the entrance, the multicoloured mosaic salamander, and the main terrace surrounded by a long bench in the form of a sea serpent.

Access & Transport

Buses H6, D40 stop at Travessera de Dalt, less than 10mins walk away and the Lesseps and Vallcarca stations on the metro L3 are both 1.1km away (~15mins walk). There is an entrance on Av. del Santuari de Sant Josep de la Muntanya and another on Carretera del Carmel (recommended for visitors with reduced mobility)

Instructions & Recommendations

We recommend buying a ticket beforehand as capacity has been limited and you must enter within 30mins of the time shown on your ticket. Kids also need a ticket (even if free). This activity is best combined with a visit of the Gràcia neighbourhood and possibly of the Labyrinth Park of Horta further north in the Horta-Guinardó district.

Meta review

The Park is one of Gaudi's most famous works and regularly appears in travel magazines and tours' to-do list. Overall, visitors seem to be surprised on the upside by the architecture and number of things to see although there is also a fair number of exactly opposite views, which is always a little perplexing but suggest that expectations play a key role. Another regular comment is that the walk up the hill from the metro is a little tiring, especially on a hot day.

Environmental & Social

Green space with little carbon footprint generation. The Park now has dedicated time slots with free access for local residents.

Conclusion

Park Güell is quite an unusual proposition in that you would not be going for the gardens / green spaces but for the decoration and architecture. If you have already seen many of Gaudi's creations, you may think twice and keep it for another time - but if you have enough time in your trip then it is definitely an option to consider.

Nice views over Barcelona

Key negative

Can be crowded

A little expensive for a park

Suitability

There are some accessible routes for visitors with reduced mobility, but some sections may be hard to reach because of stairs or steep gradients.
