Picasso Museum, Barcelona

15 Carrer de Montcada, Barcelona, Catalunya

Description

The Museu Picasso (Picasso Museum) of Barcelona houses over 4,000 works from the 20th century Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, which makes it one of the largest permanent collections dedicated to him. The museum is housed in five adjoining medieval palaces of the Carrer de Montcada in La Ribera / El Born neighbourhood of Barcelona. The permanent collection is organized into three sections: painting and drawing, engraving, and ceramics. These principally cover the early years of his artistic life.

Access & Transport

The museum is located at c/ Montcada, 15-23. It is a short 3mins walk from Jaume I (L3) metro station. The closest bus stations are on Via Laietina and Passeig Picasso

Instructions & Recommendations

It is a good idea to buy a timed ticket ahead of time as capacity is limited. We would suggest combining a visit there with a discovery of the El Born neighbourhood and the Basilica Santa Maria del Mar.

Meta review

There are mixed opinions about this museum; the art buffs enjoy the buildings and the discovery of less-famous works and sketches from the artists earlier periods whereas many visitors just go by the name and are disappointed in not seeing many works that are deemed to be among Picasso "masterpieces".

Environmental & Social

No environmental related data available. We consider this activity marginally positive from a social standpoint as it helps spread culture and the arts

Conclusion

The Museu Picasso is an excellent option for those who enjoy the artist works and anybody keen in the arts. However, be aware that the most famous works of Picasso are scattered in several museums globally so it may be a smart idea to spend a few minutes on the museum's website and check-out the highlights to see whether it is of interest to you.

Key positive

A lot of works from Picasso less-known early artistic years such as his "blue Period"

Great setting in old houses with patios

Key negative

Not many of his most famous works

A lot of sketches and drawings which may not interest most visitors for a sustained period of time

Suitability

Best suited for adults and kids aged at least 12 as younger children may find it boring. The museum is fully accessible for visitors with reduced mobility (there are lifts)
