Poble Espanyol, Barcelona

13 Avinguda Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia, Barcelona, Catalunya

Description

The Poble Espanyol (meaning "Spanish town") is an open-air architectural museum located at the base of the Montjuïc hill, close to the Palau Nacional and Pl. Espanya. It was built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition and consists of over 100 buildings replicated from different parts of Spain with restaurants, artisan workshops and the contemporary art museum Fran Daurel.

Access & Transport

The easiest is to walk from Pl. Espanya (L1, L3, L8) or take the bus 13, 23 or 150. Alternatively, the Bus Turístic and Barcelona City Tour also have a scheduled stop there. Wheelchair users should use the entrance on the left side of the ticket office.

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity is best combined with a walk to/from Plaça Espanya and a visit of the National Art Museum of Catalonia only 200m away. From there you can also explore the rest of the Montjuïc hill.

Meta review

The attraction gets mixed reviews. Some visitors enjoy the replicas and seeing the various architectural styles of one country concentrated in one location whilst other simply find the whole concept dubious. The other main recurring negative comment is that shops often seem to be closed, in particular in the evening.

Environmental & Social

No data available. We deem this activity neutral both environmentally and socially

Conclusion

The Poble Espanyol is trying to coalesce the idiosyncratic architectural styles of a large country in a small village: celebrating diversity through clichés! We can understand how the concept made sense in the early 20th century when digital media did not exist, and travel was both costly and extremely time consuming; nowadays we think that purpose has been lost. Better think about it as a theme park without rides.

Key positive

Some effort has been put into the replicas' architecture and craftmanship

Key negative

Expensive for what it is (only entrance is included) and expensive restaurants and shops inside

Many potential visitors will not be enthused by the concept

Suitability

Most of the areas are accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
