Sant Pau Recinte Modernista

167 Carrer de Sant Antoni Maria Claret, Barcelona, Catalunya

Description

The Sant Pau Recinte Modernista is a complex of buildings that operated as an hospital before undergoing restoration for use as a museum and cultural center (opened in 2014) with a new Hospital taking over just to the north of it. The complex was built between 1905 and 1930 and designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner (who also designed the Palau de la Música Catalana). Nowadays, Sant Pau hosts several organisations working in the fields of innovation, sustainability, health and culture. This review is for the self-guided tour option which include the hypostyle hall, the Sant Salvador Pavilion, the gardens, the Operations House and the Administration Pavilion as well as some information on the work of the architect.

Access & Transport

The metro station of Sant Pau / Dos de Maig (L5) is next to the complex. There are some bus services as well (H8, 19, 47, 117, 192).

Instructions & Recommendations

Guided visits take place on weekends and public holidays at 11h00 in Spanish and 12h30 in Catalan. We suggest combining this activity with a visit of La Sagrada Familia, exactly 1km away, or a discovery of the Horta-Guinardó district.

Meta review

This is a relatively "new" attraction (it used to be an operational hospital, not open for tourist visits) that is garnering increasing interest and the reviews are mostly positive. For visitors, the highlights are of course the Modernisme architecture, quite "exuberant" at times, and all the information relating to the functional design of the complex and each building's role. Most of the negative reviews relate to the lack of things to see inside the buildings and that a fair number of them are closed to the public.

Environmental & Social

The Sant Pau site has a comprehensive social programme with a focus on local community and educational activities for schools. Details can be found here: https://www.santpaubarcelona.org/en/social-programme There is a generic section on responsible tourism and environment, but it is light in concrete data / figures.

Conclusion

The Modernista Sant Pau complex is an architectural gem that deserves a visit, or at the very least a good look from outside. There is not that much to see inside but plenty to learn about an hospital operation at the beginning of the 19th century and the impact design had on it.

Key positive

One of the best examples of Modernisme architecture

Not crowded

Key negative

A little expensive considering the number of buildings that can actually be visited

Service from staff could be improved

Suitability

The complex is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
