Altes Museum, Berlin

1-3 Bodestraße, Berlin, Berlin

Description

The Altes Museum in Berlin houses the city's Collection of Classical Antiquities (Antikensammlung) that includes Roman, Etruscan and Greek artefacts, sculptures and other artworks. It was completed in 1830 and built in Neoclassical style with monumental pillars and an expansive atrium. Over its first decades of operations it was used to display the city's collection of fine arts, especially paintings from famous masters, but the establishment of the Alte Nationalgalerie and then the Bode Museum drove a change in focus.

Access & Transport

Entrance is from the Lustgarden The Museumsinsel (U5) is next to the Lustgarden and buses 100 and 200 also stop there. The Tram to Kupfergraben (M1, 12) is also a good alternative.

Instructions & Recommendations

We would not recommend attempting too many large "classical" museums over too short a period of time, so you may want to plan your visit(s) accordingly. Unless you are extremely pressed for time, we would not visit the Altes Museum, Pergamon Museum or Neues Museum on the same day as there is some degree of overlap in their collections. There is a 3-day ticket covering all SMB museums for €32 which is a perfect option for anybody looking to visit more than 2 of them. Outside of Museum Island, this activity is best combined with a visit of Gendarmenmarkt or Old Berlin / Nikolaiviertel

Meta review

All visitors enjoy the neo-classical architecture of the building but comments on the collection are mixed. Museum buffs generally do enjoy it but those that do not have a strong interest in antique art pieces get bord very quickly by the collections and wish there were more interactive displays.

Environmental & Social

Some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Altes Museum is of one of several great cultural activities concentrated on Museum Island. The collections do not include large size exhibits as in the Pergamon but for those with a keen interest on Greek and Roman/Etruscan artefacts and sculptures, this is one of the best venues outside of Italy or Greece.

Key positive

Beautiful building in a great location

The largest collection of Etruscan art outside Italy and sizeable coin collection (over 1300)

Key negative

Collections can feel a little repetitive

Suitability

Best for adults and children aged 10 and above; the younger ones may not appreciate most of the exhibits. Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility - via the service entrance.
