Berlin Wall Memorial - by Rodrigo Mesquita on Google
Description
The Berlin Wall Memorial (Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer) consists of a 60m original stretch of the Berlin Wall erected in 1961 that divided the city of Berlin in two until the fall of the Wall in Nov. 1989. It is located on Bernauer Straße at the corner of Ackerstraße, on the boundary between the districts of Wedding and Mitte. There is an open-air exhibition, a Chapel of Reconciliation built in the oval shape of a church with a façade of wooden rods and a documentation center with an observation tower across the street.
Access & Transport
Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer tram station (M10) is located at the venue and the closest train station is Berlin Nordbahnhof (S1, S2, S25, S26 and trams 12, M8, M10) only 100m away. Naturkundemuseum (U6) and Bernauer Straße (U8, tram M10) are also less than 5min walk away.
Instructions & Recommendations
The Open-air exhibition is accessible throughout the day
Environmental & Social
No environmental footprint. Positive from a social perspective as a memorial
Conclusion
The Berlin Wall memorial at Bernauer Straße is not meant to impress but to commemorate and inform. It does so in a very sober and effective manner and we think it should be high on the list of any visitor to Berlin who cares to understand what the city and its population has gone through; a first-hand city center reminder of the Iron Curtain and how geopolitics wreak havoc in people's lives.
