Berlin Zoological Garden

8 Hardenbergplatz, Berlin, Berlin

Description

The Berlin Zoological Garden is the most visited zoo in Europe. It promotes European breeding programmes, participates in species reintroduction programme and with over 20,000 animals from nearly 1,400 species it has one of the most diverse range of animal species in the world.

Access & Transport

The attractions is situated in the southwestern corner of Tiergarten Park. Visitors can either enter the zoo through the Elephant Gate beside the aquarium on Budapester Straße or through the Lion Gate on Hardenbergplatz. Zoologischer Garten (U2, U9, S3, S5, S7, S9 and regional trains) is the main station serving the zoo and a major transport node on the western side of the city. Kurfürstendamm station (U1, U9) and buses provides additional options.

Instructions & Recommendations

It is best to book tickets online ahead of time, including for kids under 4 and note that children under 12 must be accompanied by adults. This activity is best combined with the aquarium next to it, a walk through Tiergarten Park or a visit of Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and Breitscheidplatz.

Meta review

The zoo is one of the most famous in Europe but gets mixed reviews from visitors, which is not unusual for zoos and aquariums actually... The majority of visitors highlight the diversity of species and number of animals, but others point out the size of the enclosure and that some upgrading is required. They are also completely differing views about the animals looking sad or happy, hungry or well fed.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally we deem this activity neutral. Socially, the zoo is involved into research, breeding and conservation programmes which partially compensates for the animals being held in captivity.

Conclusion

The Berlin Zoological Garden is a top-tier zoo by international standards and one of the best family activities in the city, so it makes a good addition to any Berlin itinerary provided you are comfortable with the concept of animals being held in captivity.
