Charlottenburg Palace and Gardens

13 Schloßstraße, Berlin, Berlin

Description

Charlottenburg Palace ("Schloss Charlottenburg") is in Charlottenburg, Berlin. It was built in the 17th century in the Baroque style for Sophie Charlotte, the wife of Friedrich I, Elector of Brandenburg. It was then expanded with a new wing under Friedrich II. The garden was initially designed in the Baroque style as well, with inspiration from Versailles, including geometric patterns, with avenues and moats. It was redesigned in the English landscape style at the end of the 18h century but was returned to its initial Baroque style after WW2. This review is for access to the old palace, the new wing and the garden.

Access & Transport

The estate is about 7km west of the city centre. The closest underground stations are Richard Wagner Platz (U7) and Mierendorffplatz (U7). Bus 309 stops near the entrance. For those coming by car, the easiest way is via the A100, exit 6 on Spandauer Damm. Parking is available for visitors.

Instructions & Recommendations

*** the upper floor of the Old Palace is currently closed for renovation works *** It is best to check the weather forecast and select a day when rain is not on the menu to make the most of the Garden.

Meta review

Reviews for the Palace and Gardens really depend on visitors' expectations and references. For those who have been to Sanssouci in Potsdam or some of best-known palaces in France or the UK, it may not look that impressive. But those who have not, or at least not recently, really did enjoy the rich furnishing of the palace and the garden grounds. There are a few negative comments regarding price, although we believe it to be in line with top sites in continental Europe.

Environmental & Social

Not data available regarding environment and social practices and policies. The gardens are a positive but not the energy consumption required to operate the palace. Preserves the city's and country's cultural and architectural heritages

Conclusion

Schloss Charlottenburg is a sprawling and luxurious palace, not the most excessive in the country if that is the yardstick, but definitely Kingly enough in our view. It provides a welcome change from the museums, commercial city squares and WW2 / Cold War related activities to remind visitors of the region's 17th to 19th century history with a charming garden to boot.
