DDR Museum, Berlin

1 Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, Berlin, Berlin

Description

The DDR Museum is a private museum in Berlin that seeks to record and exhibit life in the former East Germany (the Deutsche Demokratische Republik). There is a recreated tower block apartment with living room, bathroom, etc., a prison cell and an interrogation room. There are also some interactive installations such as the Trabant driving simulation and over 130 restored motorbikes, scooters and sidecars.

Access & Transport

The museum is located next to the River Spree in Berlin, directly across the Berlin Cathedral. The address is Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 1 and from the Liebknecht Bridge, visitors should go down the flight of stairs directly opposite the Berlin Cathedral. Hackescher Markt tram (12, M1, M4, M5, M6, M8) and train station (S3, S5, S7, S9), Spandauer Str./Marienkirche tramstation (12, 50, M1, M4, M5, M6, M8) and Museumsinsel underground station (U5) are all within a few minutes' walk from the museum. Instructions & Recommendations

This activity is best combined with any museum on Museum Island, Berlin Cathedral and a visit of the Alt-Berlin / Nikolaiviertel neighbourhood.

Meta review

Generally good reviews with visitors mostly enjoying the visual and interactive aspects that may not be found in other more classical and memorial-style venues. The adjectives "quirky" and "fun" are often used. The main negative comments are that it can be too crowded and that it often takes a patronizing and simplistic / one-sided view of life in the DDR.

Environmental & Social

Marginally negative from an environmental standpoint (electricity consumption) but slightly positive from a social one as it helps preserve some "cultural" heritage.

Conclusion

The DDR Museum is an original take on preserving the Eastern side of the Iron Curtain. Whilst it often feels sanctimonious, it is still an excellent way to preserve a way of life "in the flesh" and introduce new generations to it in an interactive way.

Key positive

Very visual, so good for children

Good insights into way of life and East German goods and brands

Key negative

The Western European point of view should be toned down at times

Social distancing measures not enforced

Suitability

Suitable for all ages. There is a side entrance for visitors with reduced mobility, but staff assistance is required and should be requested ahead of time.
