German Historical Museum

2 Unter den Linden, Berlin, Berlin

Description

The German Historical Museum (a.k.a. DHM) presents German history in an international context. It is housed in the Zeughaus (the armoury) on the Unter den Linden as well as in the adjacent Exhibition Hall designed by I. M. Pei. opened in 2003. Note that the Zeughaus and the Permanent Exhibition on German history are "closed until probably the end of 2025" for an extensive renovation. For context, it is the oldest building on the boulevard and was built in 1695-1706. The practical information provided in this review are for the temporary exhibitions in the Pei building only.

Access & Transport

Museumsinsel station (U5) is just across the Schloss Bridge. There is also bus stop Staatsoper (100, 300) on Unter den Linden. The Pei building address is: Hinter dem Gießhaus 3 Accessibility info: https://www.dhm.de/en/visit/accessibility/

Instructions & Recommendations

*** Make sure you are interested in the current temporary exhibition (held at the Pei building) before heading there since the permanent one is closed *** This activity is best combined with the Gendarmenmarkt and any sight / museum on Museum Island (the Berlin Cathedral & Lustgarden are straight across the Schloss Bridge).

Meta review

The current temporary exhibitions draw mixed reviews and seem to change significantly in both themes and quality. Most visitors are quite disappointed when they realize that the permanent exhibition is closed. *** The meta-review of the permanent exhibition was as follows: Visitors who enjoy history find it extremely interesting, especially the pre-1919 section which is not as well-known and studied. On the opposite spectrum, there are reviewers for whom the visit gets boring quite quickly and think the display need an update.

Environmental & Social

Some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture

Conclusion

As and when the permanent exhibition reopens, we expect it will be once again one of the best museums in the city. The focus on Germany makes it a nice complement to other museums such as the Alte Nationalgalerie or the Pergamon Museum. As for the temporary exhibitions they change too regularly for us to be able to draw general conclusions.

Key positive

The Pei building architecture is worth seeing.

Excellent location on Unter den Linden and next to the Spree River

Key negative

Main exhibition in the Zeughaus building is close for several years

Suitability

Suitable for all ages but not recommended for children under 14 who will probably find it boring. The Pei building can be reached without having to use stairs and all exhibition rooms are accessible through elevators.
