BOOK ACTIVITY

German Spy Museum, Berlin

9 Leipziger Platz, Berlin, Berlin

Description

The German Spy Museum offers visitors a walk through espionnage techniques from antiquity up to modern days with a specific focus on WW2 and the Cold War eras. There are over 1000 exhibits (e.g. bugged shoes and an enigma machine) and some interactive activities such as the use of a bug detector and a laser maze.

Access & Transport

The museum is located in Berlin, just off Leipziger Platz and next to Potsdamer Platz. The most convenient way to get there is by train to either Potsdamer Platz station (U2) or Berlin Potsdamer Platz Bahnhof (S1, S2, S25, S26). There are also bus services along Leipziger Str. / Potsdamer Platz

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of Potsdamer Platz and/or the Topography of Terror Museum. Checkpoint Charlie and the Tiergarten Park are also a short walking distance away (but in opposite directions).

Meta review

Positive reviews overall; visitors enjoy the wide range of artifact and associated information, and the interactive exhibits are particularly popular. The main recurring negative comments relate to the crowding and associated waiting time for the laser maze. There are also several observations regarding age appropriateness as most of the information might be difficult to process for younger children.

Environmental & Social

No environmental related data - marginally negative on account of electricity consumption (lighting / heating). Socially neutral

Conclusion

The German Spy Museum is a great option for families, especially on a rainy day. The collection of items is large and should keep adults and kids busy for 1.5 to 2hrs and there are some fun interactive exhibits - although some waiting time might be required. We also think that Berlin is the perfect fit for such a museum considering it was a major Cold War East/West spying ground.

Key positive

Original museum with comprehensive exhibits

Some fun interactive activities

Key negative

Can be crowded with families

Lagging a bit behind with respect to cyber espionnage (understandable as it is much less visual)

Suitability

All ages are welcome, but we think it is best for children aged 8 and above. Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility except for a couple of interactive activities (incl. the laser maze)
