Holocaust Memorial, Berlin

1 Cora-Berliner-Straße, Berlin, Berlin

Description

Beerlin's Holocaust Memorial (official name is the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe) is a memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust located just south of the Brandenburg Gate and next to Tiergarten Park. It was designed by Peter Eisenman and consists of 2711 stelae (concrete slabs) measuring between 0.2 and 4.7m in height and arranged in a grid pattern. The underground information centre contains information about the victims and include historical photographs and film footage.

Access & Transport

The best way to reach the memorial is from the Brandenburger Tor station (U5, S1, S2, S25, S26) or the Mohrenstraße station (U2). There is also a bus stop closeby on Behrenstr./Wilhelmstr.

Instructions & Recommendations

The organisation in charge of the memorial advise that it is not recommended to bring children under 14 due to the content of the information centre. This activity can be combined with a visit of the Brandenburg Gate / Pariser Platz a short walk away or with the Tiergarten Park.

Meta review

Comments are mixed about the design (a recurring criticism is that it anonymizes the victims) but unanimous about the purpose and the importance of remembering the holocaust tragedy. The content of the information centre also leaves a deep impression on most visitors. What grates on most reviewers is the disrespect of many youths, even some families, who climb on the slabs.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral. Educational and commemoration aspects.

Conclusion

The Holocaust Memorial is in our view a well thought of symbolic reminder of the loss of identity of the Jew victims during Nazi Germany, such was their number and the randomness of their fate. One should not think of it as an attraction but rather as a place to learn from and reflect.
