Markthalle Neun

42-43 Eisenbahnstraße, Berlin, Berlin

Description

Markthalle Neun (meaning Market Hall #9) is a covered market in Berlin's Kreuzberg district. It sells a wide range of products with a focus on sustainability: fruits and vegetables, dairy, fish and meat, baked goods, coffee and drinks, etc. and some cooked food stalls. Markthalle IX was the ninth market hall built in Berlin (out of 14) in the later part of the 19th century. It thrived until the rise of supermarkets in the 2nd half of the 20th century and was only revitalized in 2009-12.

Access & Transport

The market is on Eisenbahnstraße, close to the Spree river. Görlitzer Bahnhof (U1, U3) is only 200m away from the market. The closest bus stops are on Lausitzer Platz and Wrangelstr. (140)

Instructions & Recommendations

Note that the market is closed on Sundays. We recommend combining this activity with a discovery off the Kreuzberg neighbourhood and/or a visit of the East Side Gallery, just across the river.

Meta review

Surprisingly mixed reviews online: on one hand the tourists and those who think of themselves as food connoisseurs rave about the variety of food from artisanal origin and on the other some disgruntled locals venting their frustration about the market and stall owners selling overpriced food to tourists and in the process ignoring the needs of a local population with much lower purchasing power. In between, there are some more balanced views simply stating that the market is smaller than they expected and that the food is mostly good, if not excellent, but clearly overpriced.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity marginally positive from an environmental standpoint as many products are grown using sustainable methods. The small producers' aspect is a positive from a social perspective, but the pricing is a negative community-wise.

Conclusion

Market Hall IX is an excellent venue for some groceries, snacks or a meal for those in the Kreuzberg district but be aware that it is a highly "gentrified" market and priced accordingly. Whilst there are a few stalls that are special and may warrant a trip on their own, we believe there are other alternatives spread out in other neighbourhoods that may be less famous but provide better value and feel more authentic (and less touristy).

Key positive

Some stalls are genuinely excellent and have become famous city-wide

Key negative

Touristy prices - not great value
