BOOK ACTIVITY

Pergamon Museum, Berlin

1-3 Bodestraße, Berlin, Berlin

Description

The Pergamon Museum is on Berlin's Museum Island and houses three collections. 1) The Museum of the Ancient near East that includes objects from Sumerian, Assyrian and Babylonian culture and the Ishtar Gate. 2) The Islamic Art Museum exhibits works of Islamic art from the Iberian Peninsula until India between the 7th and 19th centuries; notable objects include the Aleppo room and the Mshatta Facade. 3) The Antiquity Collection contains sculptures and artwork from Greek and Roman antiquity; its main exhibits are the Pergamon Altar and the Gate of Miletus. *** the Pergamon Altar is undergoing restoration until 2025 and can't be seen currently. For originals from Pergamon, please book a ticket for the "Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama" exhibition held in a temporary building ***

Access & Transport

The museum is on Museumsinsel. The entrance is through the James Simon Gallery. The Tram to Kupfergraben (M1, 12) is the best way to get there by public transport, buses 100 and 200 stop at Lustgarten and Museumsinsel (U5) is only 400m away.

Instructions & Recommendations

We would not recommend attempting too many large "classical" museums over too short a period of time, so you may want to plan your visit(s) accordingly. Unless you are extremely pressed for time, we would not visit the Altes Museum, Pergamon Museum or Neues Museum on the same day as there is some degree of overlap in their collections. There is a 3-day ticket covering all SMB museums for €32 which is a perfect option for anybody looking to visit more than 2 of them. Outside of Museum Island, this activity is best combined with a visit of Gendarmenmarkt or Old Berlin / Nikolaiviertel

Meta review

This museum is perhaps the most famous in the city thanks to the extremely impressive Pergamon Altar. Since that section of the museum has been closed for renovation, there has been a significant uptick in negative reviews with visitors wondering why the ticket price has remained the same. Overall though, the reviews are very positive and it is often mentioned that the Ishtar Gate itself is worth the detour. The main recurring negative comments are that there should be more German translation and that the museum is not as impressive as the Louvre or the British Museum.

Environmental & Social

Some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Spreads culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Pergamon Museum has temporary lost its spearhead (until 2025) but remains one of the best museums in the city for those who enjoy antique collections from the near and middle east. There are many options on Museum Island so a bit of research might be required to decide which is best for you .
