Potsdamer Platz, Berlin

Potsdamer Platz, Berlin, Berlin

Description

Potsdamer Platz is one of Berlin's largest squares and, historically, where the old road from Potsdam passed through the city wall of Berlin. Post reunification, the site saw a major redevelopment with Daimler-Benz and Sony among the main companies involved. Nowadays the square has a mix of shopping centres, theatres, restaurants and the Berlin film festival (the Berlinale) is held there every February. Every winter, Potsdamer Platz turns into a giant winter wonderland which includes Europe's biggest toboggan run and an ice rink.

Access & Transport

The square is It is located on the south-eastern corner of Tiergarten Park. The U2 line goes through Potsdamer Platz station, directly underneath the square and Berlin Potsdamer Platz Bahnhof has regional and suburban lines (S1, S2, S25, S26). There are also bus services along Leipziger Str. / Potsdamer Str. and Ebertstraße. For those who drive, there are underground car parks beneath the Potsdamer Platz Arkaden and the Sony Center.

Instructions & Recommendations

Note that many stores are closed on Sunday and only open around 10h00. We recommend combining this activity with the Dali Museum, German Spy Museum or Legoland Discovery Centre. It is also next to the Tiergarten Park.

Meta review

The reviews for the square and neighbourhood are mixed. On one hand, those interested in shopping and/or who love modern glass and steel buildings are extremely positive about the redevelopment. On the other hand, those who lean towards cultural and historical sights feel that the historical significance has been lost to give place to a modern and anonymous commercial area with big shiny buildings.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data for the area but there is a lot of asphalts, concrete, glass, metal and electricity consumption involved. Socially slightly negative because of the heavy focus on commercial activities driven by big brands / chains and advertising.

Conclusion

The Potsdamer Platz was one of the largest redevelopments projects in Berlin after the city's and country's reunification. The outcome is a popular shopping and entertainment destination for residents and tourists alike with an array of modern buildings and international brands, but nothing iconic or even unique to Berlin.
