Reichstag Building

1 Platz der Republik, Berlin, Berlin

Description

The Reichstag building houses the Bundestag, the lower house of Germany's parliament. It is located in Berlin, about 150m north of the Brandenburg Gate and was opened in 1899 to house the Imperial Diet of the German Empire. It fell in disuse during the Cold War as the GDR met in the Palast der Republik in East Berlin and the FRG met in Bonn. Post-reunification, the reconstruction was led by architect Norman Foster. The glass dome is open to visitors by prior registration.

Access & Transport

The Bundestag station (U5) is next to the building, but it is also a short walk to the Brandenburger Tor station (U5, S1, S2, S25, S26).

Instructions & Recommendations

Advanced registration through the Bundestag website is compulsory to visit the roof and dome (it can be done on the day, subject to availability). We recommend combining this with a visit of the Brandenburg Gate or Tiergarten park

Meta review

The Reichstag building gets high praise for its looks and architecture. Visitors enjoy spending some time on the grass in front of it to admire it. The only mixed reviews relate to people who wanted to go up the roof and the dome but were not aware that advanced registration was required.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally, hardly any footprint linked to tourism. We note the glass dome is letting natural light shine into the building and saves on electricity. Socially, the building is key to the country's democratic process and an important monument in its historical heritage

Conclusion

The Reichstag Building is a very stately and remarkably embodies its purpose. It is best enjoyed after reading up about its historical background and the roof / dome visit is a nice addition but doesn't transform the experience.
