Spandau Citadel, Berlin

64 Am Juliusturm, Berlin, Berlin

Description

The Spandau Citadel was built in the second half of the 16th century to protect the town of Spandau, now part of Berlin (its western-most suburb). The military structure was designed in Renaissance style with 4 symmetrically arranged bastions connected by curtain walls. Nowadays, it is a public museum and the inner courtyard holds open air concerts in the summer. There are guided tours in German organized every Saturday and Sunday at 14h00 for 3 EUR. This takes place in English every first Sunday of the month

Meta review

Most of the visitors have positive feedback about the citadel and quite evenly split between those who think it is a nice monument to wander in for an hour or so but not necessarily worth a large detour and those who really enjoyed the content (e.g. the armoury and statues), views, well-maintained building and educational value.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral and socially positive as it helps preserve the city's architectural and historical heritages.

Conclusion

The Spandau Citadel is in our opinion quite underrated; without being exceptional it is quite different from most of Berlin's other cultural activities, being museums or historical buildings. In that sense, it contributes to the city's diversity of attractions and should be considered by any visitor with more than 4 days to spend in the capital.
