Tempelhofer Field - by A.Savin (FAL)
Description
Tempelhof Field is a public park of 355ha that opened in 2010 on the site of the former Tempelhof Airport (that closed in 2008) in the south of Berlin. It is popular for picnics, skateboarding, in-line skating, bicycling and kite flying. Historically, it was an area used for military practice and as a parade ground for the Berlin garrison before it was turned into an airport in the early 1920's.
Access & Transport
There are 3 underground / train stations along the western hedge of the field: Platz der Luftbrücke to the north (U6), Paradestraße (U6) and Tempelhof (U6, S41, S42, S45, S46, S47) to the south. By car, it is best accessed from the A100 / Tempelhofer Damm. The Park is accessible from sunrise to sunset and has ten entrances
Instructions & Recommendations
The park is best enjoyed in pleasant weather conditions so best to check the forecast beforehand. It might be a good idea to bring a mat, food and drinks to enjoy a picnic.
Environmental & Social
Mostly green space so environmentally positive. Socially it is a good place for the neighbourhood and city residents to come and enjoy some physical and/or leisurely activities.
Conclusion
The Tempelhof field is an unusual airport reconversion (or actually, lack of in a sense) and is certainly a place that should be patronized by residents. It is not in our view a highlight though and travellers who are looking for green spaces might be better served either with a smaller more central park, Tiergarten Park or going a bit further out of the city and into a forested area.
