Tiergarten Park, Berlin

Straße des 17. Juni, Berlin, Berlin

Description

The Tiergarten is a large inner-city park (210ha) located in the namesake district of Berlin. It was founded as a hunting area in the 16th century before significant development in the 18th century when King Frederick Wilhelm I decided to connect his castle to the newly built Charlottenburg Palace and his successor opened the park to the public. The Berlin Zoo is located within the precinct as well as the Soviet War memorial, the Victory Column, the Memorial to Homosexuals Persecuted Under Nazism and the Memorial to the Sinti and Roma Victims of National Socialism. Facilities include jogging / cycling tracks and sport fields.

Access & Transport

On the park's western side, the best access is from Berlin Tiergarten (S3, S5, S7, S9) and Hansaplatz (U9 - slightly to the northwest). From the east, Brandenburger Tor (U5, S1, S2, S25, S26) is the most practical option. There are also bus services along the southern and northern edges of the park.

Instructions & Recommendations

We would suggest exploring the park as a break from the highlights on its eastern side (from the Reichstag Building to Potsdamer Platz) and possibly to connect to the Berlin Zoo or the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church / Kurfürstendamm on the southwestern end. It is also an excellent option for runners looking for green spaces.

Meta review

Reviews of the park are positive but not unanimously so. Most visitors enjoy the large size and generally the concept of an inner-city park but there are many comments about it being a little underwhelming, in particular from mid-fall to early spring when it looks very barren. Cyclists behaving like they own the place also seems to be an issue.

Environmental & Social

Green activity. Contributes positively to the living environment of residents

Conclusion

Tiergarten Park is the best "forest like" option in the center of Berlin; it is a great for sport enthusiasts and those simply looking to enjoy a walk in a green environment or as a picnic spot (weather permitting). We don't think it is a must-see for a first-time visitor to Berlin but since it is on the way to Kurfürstendamm / Breitscheidplatz, it would be a lost opportunity not to include it if you plan to go there.
