Description
Treptower Park is a large public park (84ha) located in the neighbourhood of Alt-Treptow in Berlin, on the left bank of the Spree River. Its main feature is the Soviet War Memorial commemorating the 80,000 Soviet soldiers that died during the Battle of Berlin in April-May 1945; 7000 soldiers of the Red Army are buried there. Secondary and more leisurely features include a river path, a rose garden and a lake. It is also a good place to visit the small Insel der Jugend by walking over the Abteibrücke (Abbey Bridge) and the Stralau peninsula.
Access & Transport
The Treptower Park station (S8, S9, S41, S42, S85) is at the north-western corner of the park and there are bus stops along Puschkinallee (165, 166, 265 - northwest direction) and Rethelstr. (same services - southeast direction).
Instructions & Recommendations
Go in the early hours if you enjoy quiet surroundings - it is also perfect for a run and a stroll along the Spree riverbank.
Environmental & Social
A green activity and the memorial helps commemorate part of the city's history.
Conclusion
Treptower Park is a little off the standard tourist trail, but we think that anybody with at least 4 days in the city should think of visiting. It makes for a nice walk but more importantly it contains a rare memorial to the Battle of Berlin that honours the sacrifice of the Red Army - this is not to ignore some of the crude reality of the liberation, but western tourists tend to forget (or have not been taught) the importance of the Eastern front during WW2 although it was vastly more deadly than the western one.
Key positive
Pleasant riverbank path
Sobering Soviet War memorial
Key negative
Not walking distance from other touristic sights
Suitability
Suitable for all ages and accessible for visitors with reduced mobility; the memorial has steps but also a step-free route.
