Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

2 Abandoibarra Etorbidea, Bilbo, Euskadi

Description

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao was designed by architect Frank Gehry using curved titanium sheets, glass and limestone. It is widely considered one of the masterpieces of contemporary architecture. The museum houses a collection of modern and contemporary art with often-changing temporary exhibitions of famous artists such as Richard Serra as well as Basque artists.

Access & Transport

The building is on the southern bank of the Nervion River, about 2km northwest from the old city centre of Bilbao. Tram #5 stops at the 'Guggenheim' station, just 100m from the museum and the Moyua metro station is 700m to the south. The building does not have a dedicated onsite parking. Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit there with a walk through the Doña Casilda Park and for those who don't mind more art, the Fine Arts Museum of Bilbao is next to the park.

Meta review

Anybody who has picked up a guide about Bilbao or even the Spanish Basque Country will undoubtedly have seen pictures of the museum. Online reviews also compliment the architectural design that made this building iconic but comments about the art inside is far from being consistent. In fact, most reviewers seem quite disappointed and even find some of the galleries quite empty. A not so favorable comparison is sometimes drawn with the other Guggenheim museums in Venice and NYC.

Environmental & Social

The museum has made environmental sustainability a priority and even accounts for indirect carbon emissions. The focus is on improving energy efficiencies and reduction in electricity and gas consumption. Helps spread the arts and participated to the rejuvenation of the city.

Conclusion

If you are in the Bilbao area, then the building is definitely worth a detour. However, the main attraction are the exterior and the internal spaces rather than the artwork inside. If you are not into contemporary art, don't feel compelled to purchase tickets but make sure you stroll by.
