Musée d'Aquitaine - by Fleur Mercier on Google
Description
The Musée d'Aquitaine gathers artefacts and documents related to the history of Bordeaux and the Aquitaine region since prehistoric times. The collection includes the following sections: prehistory and protohistory, antiquity, Middle Ages, modern era, Bordeaux in the 18th century with a focus on the Atlantic trade and slavery, the Port of Bordeaux in the period 1800-1939 and the city in the 20th century.
Access & Transport
The Musee d'Aquitaine tram station (line B) and bus stop (16) are next to the museum.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with shopping along rue Sainte Catherine or a visit of the Bordeaux Cathedral, a short walk away.
Environmental & Social
Minor environmental impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Positive from a social perspective as it helps preserve the region's cultural and historical heritages and educate visitors
Conclusion
The Musée d’Aquitaine is an excellent museum with a broad collection and appeal; even though it is focused on the geographic region of Aquitaine, a lot of the artefacts and educational content are relatively generic. The importance of the city as a slave trading port is not forgotten and neither is wine. In our opinion, this is one of the best cultural activities in the city.
Key positive
Inclusion of a section focused on slave trade and the role of the city in it
Inexpensive entrance fee
Key negative
No world-famous masterpieces to attract more visitors
Suitability
Suitable for all ages but best for children aged 10 and above. Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
