Cité du Vin, Bordeaux

134 Quai de Bacalan, Bordeaux, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

The Cité du Vin is a museum in Bordeaux focused on preserving and promoting the wine related cultural heritage of the region. The design is an allusion to the wine twirling in a glass as well as the winding course of the Garonne River. This review is for the standard ticket that gives visitors access to: (i) the Permanent route: 3,000m2 of free course to discover the wine cultures, and (ii) tasting of a glass of wine (or grape juice) at Belvédère on the 8th floor.

Access & Transport

The museum is located in the Bacalan / Bassins à flot redeveloped neighbourhood on the northern side of the city. The Cite du Vin Tram stop (line B) and bus stop (7, 32) are 200m away. By car it is next to the Jacques Chaban Delman bridge and can be reached by taking exit 4C (Bd Aliénor d'Aquitaine) on the Ring Road. Instructions & Recommendations

We recommend combining this with a walk / bike ride along the Quais and/or a visit to the Mer Marine Museum nearby (1km)

Meta review

Some very positive reviews on balance; most visitors enjoy the high-tech delivery of information and the building spacious interiors as well as the glass of wine with view of the city. There is a significant percentage of reviewers who are not so keen on the interactive exhibits or find the wine related content too basic for them.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally quite a few efforts: 70% of electricity requirements are supplied by local and green energy, the building has a "bioclimatic design" and there is a focus on waste management. From a social perspective, the preservation of a specific aspect of the local and French culture needs to be balanced with the fact that alcohol consumption can't be considered positive.

Conclusion

La Cite du Vin in Bordeaux is interesting in many respects, from its architecture to the exhibit layout and its theme around wine, and how it has shaped the culture of many regions. It is a family friendly activity and quite unique to the city so we would recommend including it in your itinerary. Price is not cheap but certainly not unreasonable by international standards.
