Mer Marine Museum Bordeaux

Musee Mer Marine - by Florent Ferradou by Google
Description
The Musée de la Mer et de la Marine focuses on Bordeaux's maritime history and culture (it was for a long time the 2nd largest port in the world), and on oceanography. The Museum hoses a collection of more than 10,000 marine objects (scale models and life-size boats, navigation instruments, maps and atlases) and pieces of art spanning several millennia of history of navigation. It is set in a 7-storey reminiscent of an ocean liner.
Access & Transport
Address: 89 rue des étrangers The Rue Achard Tram stop (line B). Buses 4, 7, 32 and 9 all have stops within walking distance as well. By car it is next to the Jacques Chaban Delman bridge and can be reached by taking exit 4C (Bd Aliénor d'Aquitaine) on the Ring Road
Instructions & Recommendations
We recommend combining a visit there with the Cite du Vin (1km away).
Environmental & Social
Marginally negative from an environmental standpoint (construction and electricity consumption) and positive socially for preserving the city's cultural heritage / history and educating visitors on oceanography.
Conclusion
The Musée Mer Marine is, along the Cite du Vin, the museum that best capture the city's historical and cultural trajectory. It is very visual with hundreds ship replicas but lacks a little bit of in-depth analysis and interactive exhibits. If you have at least 3 days in the city and an interest in anything ship or ocean, it is certainly worth visiting.
Key positive
Extensive collection of marine artefacts
Interesting modern building
Key negative
A little expensive
Could do with more information and interactive exhibits for children
Suitability
Suitable for all ages. It is a very modern building and we would be surprised if accessibility turns out to be an issue.
