Saint Pierre Quarter, Bordeaux
1 / 4
Quartier Saint Pierre - by Leopold Verrons on Google
Description
The Quartier Saint Pierre is the heart of the Vieux Bordeaux (the old city) with the Porte Cailhau being the main gate from the port. Several churches were built during the middle-ages and the streets named according to various professions such as Chai des Farines (grain warehouse), Argentiers (silversmith) or Trois Chandeliers (candlemakers). Wealthier families moved in during the 16th century and the area has remained very well preserved. It is known for its many squares, quaint narrow streets and array of bars, restaurants and cafes.
Access & Transport
The best tram stops to reach the neighbourhood are Place de la Bourse (C, D) to the east, Place du Palais (A) to the south and Grand Théâtre (B) to the northwest.
Instructions & Recommendations
The area is best enjoyed from mid-morning onward when the cafes start opening and in the evening. If you want "clean" pictures though you may want to wander there early morning. This activity is best combined with Porte Cailhau, Place de la Bourse and Rue Sainte Catherine.
Environmental & Social
Very urban environment. Increase in tourism and commercialization is putting pressure on rents and impacting the community

The Quartier Saint Pierre in Bordeaux should be on any visitor's itinerary; it is not very large but encapsulates the Vieux Bordeaux with its medieval layout, old city gates, churches and squares. It is also a great place to have dinner and go out in the evenings.
