Triangle d'Or & Grand Theatre, Bordeaux

Place de la Comédie, Bordeaux, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

The Triangle d'Or ("Golden Triangle") in Bordeaux is the city's most upmarket residential and shopping area, it encompasses the area between Place Tourny, Place Gambetta and Place de la Comédie where the Opera / Grand Theatre is located. Its shape is very much that of an equilateral triangle with 500m long edges and Place des Grands Hommes in its centre. The Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux is an opera house inaugurated in 1780; it is designed with a neo-classical facade, Corynthian columns and a grand staircase. Today, it is home to the Opéra National de Bordeaux and the Ballet National de Bordeaux.

Access & Transport

The Grand Théâtre has its namesake tram stop (line B) and it is only a 150m walk from Place des Quinconces (B, C, D) to the Triangle d'Or. Buses (2, 3, 4, 12, 15) also stop on Cr Georges Clemenceau, on the triangle's western side.

Instructions & Recommendations

The Grand Théâtre holds scheduled guided tours for a fee, please check the website for additional information. We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Saint Pierre neighbourhood, Place des Quinconces or a relaxing walk in the Jardin Public, less than 10mins away.

Meta review

The Grand Theatre is one of the most famous buildings in the city and gets a lot of praise from visitors who enjoy the architecture (the columns and sculptures in particular) and are quite impressed by the interior as well. The rest of the Triangle d'Or also gets commended for its clean and elegant architecture The only negative reviews relate to customers watching a ballet or theatre show (usual issues), which is outside the scope of this review.

Environmental & Social

Mostly concrete neighbourhood with no green spaces. From a social perspective, it has always been a very exclusive area, so the cost-of-living issue doesn't have any meaningful impact on the community

Conclusion

The Triangle d'Or is worth a quick visit and probably more time for shoppers with a large budget, but the real showstopper here is the Grand Théâtre with its imposing yet refined architecture, well highlighted by the spacious Place de la Comédie.
